Structural Work and Structural Reinforcement in Le Sud-Ouest
Working on the Structure of an Existing Building
In existing buildings throughout Montreal's Le Sud-Ouest borough, certain structural issues require significant interventions, including beam replacement, the addition or replacement of columns, floor reinforcement or modifications to the building's load-bearing system.
These projects become particularly challenging when the structure requiring modification is located in a crawl space with very limited ceiling height and restricted access.
Designing an appropriate structural solution is only part of the challenge. It is also necessary to determine how to transport, assemble and install the new structural components in a space where conventional construction methods may not be possible.
Indigo Construction provides structural work and structural reinforcement services in Le Sud-Ouest and throughout Greater Montreal, working in coordination with engineers and other professionals involved in each project.
Structural Work in Le Sud-Ouest
Depending on the building and the structural issues involved, our services may include:
· Replacement of structural beams
· Installation of LVL beams
· Installation of steel beams
· Replacement or addition of columns
· Installation of HSS steel columns
· New concrete bases and footings
· Reinforcement of existing floors
· Modifications to load-bearing structures
· Structural work in crawl spaces
· Temporary structural support during construction
· Coordination with a structural engineer
Every intervention must be adapted to the existing structure, the loads that need to be supported and the physical constraints of the building.
Completed Project: Structural Reinforcement on Sainte-Marguerite Street

Replacement of a Beam and Columns Inside a Crawl Space
Our project for Magali, owner of a fourplex on Sainte-Marguerite Street in Le Sud-Ouest, illustrates the unique challenges that can arise when performing structural work in an existing building.
The objective was to replace major components of the existing structure inside the crawl space, including a beam and several columns.
However, the main challenge was not purely structural.
The crawl space offered approximately three feet of clearance, with extremely limited access. We therefore had to develop a method for installing the new structural components in an area where conventional working methods and material handling were simply not possible.
Installing an LVL Beam in an Extremely Confined Space
One of the project's main challenges was installing the new LVL beam.
With only a few feet of clearance and very limited access to the crawl space, it was impossible to bring in and handle the beam as would normally be done in an open space.
The solution required bringing the beam in in separate sections and assembling it directly inside the crawl space.
This method required careful preparation, as the individual components ultimately had to form a structural system capable of properly supporting the specified loads.
The engineering plans specified the composition of the new LVL beam, along with its connections and support points.
New HSS Steel Columns on Concrete Bases
The project also involved replacing the existing supports with new HSS steel columns.
These columns were installed on new concrete bases to properly transfer the loads to the ground.
Connections between the various structural components were then completed according to the engineer's plans, including the use of steel plates and welded connections.
The objective was to create a strong, permanent structural system connecting the new beam, columns and their supporting bases.
The Challenge: Working in a Crawl Space with Only Three Feet of Clearance
On paper, replacing a beam and several columns may seem relatively straightforward.
However, actual job site conditions can completely change how the work needs to be performed.
In this case, a significant portion of the work had to be completed inside a crawl space with approximately three feet of clearance. Access for workers, materials and equipment was extremely limited.
Handling the beam, installing the columns, constructing the concrete bases and completing the structural connections all had to be carried out in this confined environment.
This type of project demonstrates why structural work in existing buildings requires not only an engineered solution, but also a construction method adapted to the actual conditions on site.
The Result: A Basement Ready for Finishing
Once the work was completed, the LVL beam, new HSS columns and concrete bases formed the new support system designed for this section of the building.
For the owner, this represented a significant investment in her fourplex. The objective was to ensure that the building's structural system was adequate and that the components requiring attention were corrected with a durable solution.
Magali was very satisfied with the work performed by Indigo Construction and subsequently entrusted us with additional projects on her property.
Structural Reinforcement and Structural Modifications in Le Sud-Ouest
Not all structural problems require the same solution.
Depending on the building, the work may involve replacing a beam, adding columns, constructing new concrete supports or reinforcing existing structural components.
Indigo Construction specializes in:
· Replacement of structural beams
· Installation of LVL and steel beams
· Installation and replacement of columns
· Reinforcement of existing structures
· Structural work inside crawl spaces
· Construction of new concrete bases and supports
· Structural modifications as part of major renovations
· Foundation work requiring structural interventions
For projects requiring structural engineering, we coordinate with engineers to ensure that the construction methods comply with the specifications outlined in the approved plans.
